BURNT TO DEATH.
Bluff, July 26. Emanuel Edmund Deer, aged about sixty years, was burnt to death last night. He lived by himself in a four-roomed house. At about 11.30 a passer-by netted a flare through a window, and on knocking at the door Deer replied that he would be out in a minute. Deer, it is presumed, waited too long, and was overcome by smoke. The body was found in the front room, where no fire had been during the day. Close to it were found the remains of a purse containing a number of charred notes and several pieces of gold, which no doubt Deer tried to save.
