DIRECTOIRE COSTUME DELAYS A STEAMER.
Stevedores Dazed by the New Fashion. New York, June 7. The new Directoire costume delayed the liner Oceanic for ten minutes past her sailing time yesterday, and incidentally was the cause of an unexpected sensation at the White Star dock. A woman wearing one of the new “sheath” dresses, with grey stockings, drove to the Oceanic to bid some friends farewell. ' When the stevedores saw the daring costume they immediateiy stopped work and gazed openmouthed, as though fascinate!, at the woman. Despite the entreaties and threats of the officers they would not resume their duties as long as the new costume remained in sight. Their embarrassing interest greatly agitated the wearer, who was finally escorted weeping to her carriage by a policeman.
