POLICE COURT.
At the local Police Court this morning before Messrs Alf. Fraser and P. J. Hennessy, J.’sP., Ernest Rowe (Mr Barnard), was charged by the police with (1) using abusive and insulting language in Park Street last night, whereby a breach of the peace may have been occasioned ; (2) did wilfully resist Constable Sweeney while ■ in tire execution of his duty. Defendant pleaded not guilty and Mr Barnard applied for an adjournment of the case to be heard before the Magistrate.
Constable Woods pointed out that cases of this nature could not be remanded for more than eight days, and it was within the jurisdiction of the justices to deal with and asked the Bench to deal with the case, as accused had been out on bail, and accused’s solicitor should have had time to work up his defence. He had gone to the trouble of summoning the justices etc.
Accused’s counsel asked for an adjournment for one week, but the Bench decided to hear the case to-morrow morning at 10.30.
Charles Wanklyn (Barnard) was charged by the police, with obstructing Constable Sweeney while in the execution of his duty. This case was also remanded till to-morrow.
