THE VOLUNTEERS.
At a preliminary meeting of the promoters of the local volunteer corps, held in Mr Rae-Howard’s rooms last night, arrangements were discussed in connection with the meeting advertised for Wednesday evening. The speakers were firmly of the opinion that the coming meeting would decide whether the services of the corps would be accepted or not. There is no doubt this will be the case. The District Adjutant is making the visit for the purpose of seeing whether the residents of Foxton are enthusiastic in the application, and if he finds, from the fact that the meeting is poorly attended, that no real interest is being taken in the matter, he will be sure to forward an unfavourable report to the Council, and a letter of rejection will follow in due course. We hope, therefore, that all interested will make a point of attending, so that there will be no question about the amount of support which the town is affording to the movement.
