RESIGNATION OF THE HIGH COMMISSIONER.
lu the House last Friday the Prime Minister announced that he had received a cablegram from Mr W. P. Reeves stating that owing to Mr Reeves’ appointment as Director of the London School of Kconomics, he proposed to tender his resolution as High Commissioner in London for the Dominion, as from October next. Sir Joseph said that in view of the importance of the position held by the High Commissioner, and that his resignation took effect from October, obviously it would not be possible for any appointment to be made until October next—until after the resignation. This would necessitate someone proceeding to London to take up his position on November xst. He did not know what arrangement might be required to be made to fill the position, but he proposed before the House rose to make a statement to the House as to what the intentions of the Government were. The matter was one of considerable importance and required consideration by the Government before it was decided what should be done.
