TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

Classes to be Formed immediately. The Board’s instructor Waits on the Committee. At Thursday night’s meeting of the local School Committee, the belated question of technical education was discussed, and the matter advanced another step. Mr Fossey, the Board’s technical instructor, was in attendance. The Chairman explained that the Secretary had been in communication with Mr Fossey in reference to local technical school matters, and he replied stating that an interview with the Committee on technical matters would be more satisfactory than correspondence, hence his visit. He breifly outlined the steps that had been taken by the late committee on the question. A lengthly discussion then followed, and it was resolved to start the classes as soon as the pupils were available. The following classes and instructors were then decided upon: —Dressmaking and millinery, Miss Doreen (Palmerston North), instructress ; English and arithmetic, Mr Adams ; bookkeeping, Mr Pearson; shorthand, Mr Hornblow ; woodwork class, Mr Bannister stationary engine drivers’ class, Mr Gillies. It was resolved that an application be made to the Board for a grant for day cookery and woodwork classes, and that this Committee grant ,£lO towards equipment of woodwork class. It was pointed out that the fees for each class would not exceed one guinea per term of twelve lessons, the lessons in each class to occupy two hours. Mr Fossey, the Chairman, and Secretary, were deputed to draw up the prospectus, and have same printed and distributed. Mr Adams was unanimously appointed local supervisor of the technical classes.
