CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
The monthly meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce, was held in the secretary’s office on Thursday evening last, there being present Messrs Heunessy (President), W. J. White, Jenks, A. Ross, Walker, Perreau, W. E. Barnard, and P. H. Rae-Howard (Secretary). The minutes of the previous ordinary and special meetings were confirmed.
After considerable correspondence had been read in connection with the Harbour Board scheme, the President reported that he had paid a visit to Otaki to interview Mr Field, M.P., to obtain his advice as to whether or not it would be advisable to proceed with the Bill. This was the first opportunity that he (the President) had been successful in meeting Mr Field, and the latter had expressed himself as heartily in sympathy with the project. After some discussion on the matter the Council resolved to proceed with the Bill as soon as the plan of the wharl and railway yard could be attested by a licensed surveyor (arrangements for which have since been made). The Chamber’s finances were next taken into account. The Secretary stated that few members outside the Council itself had paid their subscriptions, and it was acccordinly resolved to notify defaulting members that their subscriptions were overdue and to circularise those residents ot the town and surrounding district who were not already members with a view of nominating them for membership. Several accounts were then pasfor payment and the Council rose.
