THE GAS WORKS.

There is strong evidence of business in reference to the installation of coal gas. All the plant has been discharged, and the wharf presents the appearance of a field of pipe plant and machinery. Mr Watt, the engineer for Mr G. B. Watson, the contractor for the work, arrived yesterday, and was at work an hour after arrival, making arrangements for transferring the plant (some 230 tons) to the works. The extent of the plant will convey some idea of the undertaking. Mr George Coley is the successful tenderer for the carting, so that for the next few days his splendid teams, loaded with plant and machinery, will be a familiar sight in the streets from the wharf to the works. It is perhaps a little too. previous to talk of completion, but Mr Watt intorms us that, all being well, he anticipates having gas in Foxton towards the end of July, and hopes ere long to give strong evidence both to the eye and ear, that the works will be pushed on at record speed. As soon as the plant has been delivered at the site, and pipes distributed in the various streets, the main laying will be commenced, when as many men as can conveniently be employed, will be put on, the other work proceeding simultaneously.
