VALEDICTORY.

At a meeting of the local Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening, after the ordinary business had been disposed of, mention was made of Mr T. Rimmer’s (a member of the Council) departure for England, and members took the opportunity of expressing the wish that Mr and Mrs Rimmer-would have an enjoyable trip and a safe return. Mr Rimmer thanked the Council for its kindly wishes. He stated that he would be absent for about nine months. Mr Rimmer intends to take up his permanent residence in Foxton, on his return. At Ashhurst on Monday night, Mr Rimmer, who has been a resident of that district for upwards of thirty years, was entertained at a smoke concert, and presented with a travelling bag suitably inscribed. Mr G. S. Rumble, J.P., in making the presentation, mentioned many reminiscences of the good old times, and eulogised Mr Rimmer and family for the share of work they shouldered in the young days of the township. In Mr Rimmer they had had a good citizen, who had fought many a hard fight in the battle of life, and in Mrs Rimmer one of kindly nature; and the family was one any man should be proud of. On behalf of many residents, he presented Mr Rimmer with a travelling bag, and hoped it would accompany him on many such pleasurable journeys as he was about to undertake.

Mr Rimmer, iu returning thanks, said that Ashhurst having been his home for so many years would always be upper-most in his mind, and he appreciated the presentation, not only for its intrinsic value, but for the good wishes which prompted it. Although he he was disposing of his business, and would in all probability settle in Foxton on his return to the Dominion, he would still have interests in the townsnip and always remember his Ashhurst friends.

Mr Rimmer and family leave per Arawa on the 26th iust.
