INSANITARY CHINESE HUTS.

To lie Abolished.

At last night’s Council meeting the Nuisance Inspector reported that there were a number of Chinese hovelp on a borough road opposite Mr Austin’s flaxmill. The huts were in a very insanitary condition and filth was very prominent. He suggested that the huts be destroyed and the nuisance abated at once.—This report brought Cr Baker to his feet who stated that it had been mentioned at a public meeting that Maori women had been enticed into these hovels for immoral purposes. He thought action should be taken at once by the proper authorities. Could the Council take action in the matter?

The Mayor said if the hovels were on the road the Council would have them removed at once. As to the alleged statements re immorality that was a matter for the police to deal with. One Councillor facetiously remarked that the services of Monel Terry be engaged. After further suggestions and remarks a resolution was carried authorising the Inspector to have the nusiance complained of abated and if any huts were found to be encroaching on the borough road to serve the occupiers with a notice to have same removed.
