RIVER PROTECTION.
A conference of delegates from the various local bodies whose districts are affected by the overflow waters of the Mauawatu and Oioua rivers was held at the Borough Council Chambers, Palmerston, yesterday. , Messrs B. G. Gower (Mayor) and Cr Frauklaud represented Foxton Borough Council. Representatives from all local bodies interested were present. The Mayor of Palmerston moved the following resolution, which was seconded by Mr Fitzherbert:—“That this meeting (prior to committing itself to any defined course of action) appoints a committee to investigate the whole question of the control of the Mauawatu and Oroua rivers, and especially on the causes operating, their means of relief, the consequent financial position, and generally to obtain by evidence and enquiry that requisite amount of knowledge which will enable the committee to frame recommendations to place before the delegates appointed at an adjourned meeting, and that such committee consist of one representative from each public body sending delegates to this meeting, six to form a quorum.” The following were elected a committee :—Messrs Hunt, Kendall, Collis, Sanson, Carman, Bryant, Brown, Wheeler, J. G. Wilson, Stevenson, Gower, Essex, and Fitzherbert. It was resolved that each local body invited to send delegates be asked to contribute £5 towards the expenses of obtaining necessary information as decided upon.
