A SERIOUS CHARGE.
Alleged Robbery From a Deaf Mute.
At the Wellington S.M. Court yesterday Archibald M’Nab was charged with the theft of ,£1.15 from a deaf mute, named David Sutherland, on May 27th last. It will be remembered that Sutherland disappeared from his lodgings on that date, and three weeks later (on June 18) his body was found in the harbour. It was known that he had a sum of about £lls. on his person when he disappeared, it having come to the knowledge of the police that such a sum was withdrawn from the bank by the deceased on that date. On being searched, only one penny was. ( found in deceased’s pocket, and ,-j though search has been made.fey,£the police, nothing had been discovered to indicate what had become of the money. A post mortem examination was made, and at a subsequent inquiry into the cause of death, the jury returned a verdict of “ Found drowned near the Glasgow Wharf, Wellington, but there is no evidence to show how deceased got into the harbour.” As the result of inquiries made by the police, the accused, who had been working on a Wairarapa station up till November 16, was arrested by Detective Cassels on Thursday of last week wheu about to ship to Loudon as a fireman. Sutherland, a single man, was a cabinet maker by trade, and belonged to Dunedin.
