THE PUBLIC WORKS STATEMENT.

The Public Works Statement was brought down in the House by the Hon. Jas. McGowan, acting Minister for Public Works, yester- , day. £2,205,605 was spent in public works last year. The estimate of expenditure for public works for the current year, amounts to ,£2,345,951. Railways absorbed £1,345,795 last year. Fifty miles of railway have been completed and opened since last Statement was brought down, and ballast trains are running on an additional 80 miles. The gap between the rail heads of the Main Trunk Line, Wellington to Auckland, is 24 miles.
