A HORRIBLE CRIME.
Woman’s Body Dismembered. London, August 7. An Englishman named Goold and his French wife, both formerly of Waterloo, near Liverpool, were arrested at Marseilles. They ordered a trunk, to be despatched to London. Afterwards blood was found to be oozin; from ih? "Irunic, which, on being opemd, was found to contain the headless and legless body of a woman. Goold's portmanteau contained the head and legs. Goold stated that a Swedish woman named Livey, who frequented a gambling room, was murdered at their house at Monte Carlo by a disappointed lover, and that the Goolds, fearing arrest because the body was on their premises, decided to return to England with the corpse.
A man named Bucker has been arrested at Monte Carlo as a party to the crime. It is reported from Marseilles that the woman Livey had much jewellery. Sensational Developments. London, August 8. The Goolds, who were arrested at Marseilles alter ordering a trunk to be conveyed to London, which contained the mutilated bodj r of a woman, will be tried at Monte Carlo.
A blood-stained dagger, chopper, saws, and knife have been found in their apartmetns. A niece living with them was sent away before the crime by Mrs Goold to her people. Goold, while at Monte Carlo , openly styled himself “ Sir Vere Goold.” His wife gave the police her maiden name of Girodin. Both were heavy gamblers. An entry in Livey’s notebook mentions she lent the Goolds a thousand francs, and a card was found asking for immediate repayment.
The newspapers allege Goold as apparently a brother of Sir James Stephen Goold, or is using an assumed name.
The prisoners, with their niece, lived at Montreal in 1891, and conducted a fashionable dressmaking business.
Sir James’ brother married a Mademoiselle Girodin.
