FLAX GRADING.
Wellington, August 8
The new flax grading regulations, an amendment ot the regulations issued in April last appear in the Gazette. In the main the regulations are the same, the chief point of difference being in the method of arriving at the quality. The decision to make bale bands of hemp equal in quality to the average of the bale instead of tow bands is retained. Instead of allotting 20 points ot each of five divisions of quality washing has been eliminated and the scoring reads : —For stripping. 25 points; scutching, 25 ; colour, 25 ; strength, 25 ; total, 100. The standards on which grades are to be determined have been altered by making for “ superior ” ten points instead of nine. These now read :
Grade points. A (superior) 90 to 100 inclusive B (fine) 80 to 89 C (good fair) 70 to 79 D (fair)..... 60 to 69 E (common) 50 to 59 F (rejected) under 50 Thus condemned fibre may now be shipped as “ rejected,” but the grader may absolutely condemn any hemp which in his opinion has been so badly treated as to make it useless.
