A GREAT SWINDLE.

Bogus Daughter of Late Bishop Cowie.

London, July 1

The “ Daily Express ” reveals a great swindle conducted by Mrs Elizabeth Horne (who represented herself to be a daughter of the late Bishop Cowie, of Auckland), Mrs Catherine Christie (aged 80 years), and a negro.

It is alleged that they formed a syndicate and worked Pondon and Paris for years, with a project for developing 32,000 square miles of laud in Madagascar, supposed to carry timber, gold, precious stones, and gums. The project was conducted in the name of charity, and every investor was sworn to secrecy.

A solicitor’s inquiries revealed that the French Government gave an official disavowal of the concession.

According to a telegram from Auckland, Bishop Cowie had only one daughter, who married Mr Marshall, a resident of the Upper Waikato, and she is still living there. The woman referred to must have been a person posing as a daughter of the late Bishop Cowie.
