THE SHANNON - MOUTOA BRIDGE.

At a public meeting at Shannon last week, it was decided that a function to celebrate the driving of the first pile of the ShannonMoutoa bridge be organised, and a committee was appointed to carry it out. It was decided that Mrs Stephenson be invited to perform the ceremony of driving the first pile; that Messrs Stevens and Field, M’s.H.R., be invited to be present, also the Chairman and Councillors of the Horowhequa and Manawatu County Councils, the Mayor and Councillors of the Foxton Borough Council. It was further decided that the visitors be entertained at luncheon, and that a social be held in the Town Hall in the evening. As the erection of the bridge will bring Foxton and Shannon into closer touch, we should have preferred to see Foxton citizens taking a more prominent part in the pile-driving. However, as the opening ceremony will follow, perhaps our local citizens will rise to the occasion, and supervise this function in conjunction with the settlers on this side of the river. We pass the suggestion on to the Borough Council and Chamber of Commerce.
