LICENSING MATTERS.
The Eicensing Benches throughout the colony are making it apparent to hotel licensees that hotels are not to be conducted solely as drinking shops, but that proper accommodation for the comfort and safety of the travelling public shall be the point of primary importance. A great number of licensees have had their licenses held over for three months in order that they may carry out the improvements ,to buildings and appointments suggested by the Health Department and the police. Foxton licensees have not been exempt in this respect. In fact one local One licensee was urged by the Chairman to pull down and rebuild his premises. The Chairman of the Bench, Magistrate Stanford, was very severe in his criticism of the building in question. The police report on the conduct of local hotels was very favourable.
