A BETTING CASE.

Timaku, May 30. C. Peterson, tobacconist, was charged this afternoon with laying “tote” odds with two men on the Tahuna Park races a Aw weeks ago. Through some dispute between the parties the case came to the ears of the police. The two men were called as witnesses, and both refused to give evidence on the ground that they would incriminate themselves, and the charges had to he dropped. One of the men had made a written statement to a constable, but accused’s counsel contended that this was inadmissible, as defendant was not present when it was made.
