ALLLEGED TOBACCO THEFT.
Mastkkton, May 29. For some time past there' have been pilferings of goods at the Masterton railway sheds, and several articles, including a case ot champagne, disappeared in an unknown manner. The department instituted enquires, but was unable to sheet the matter home to any person. The other day, however, two boxes of tobacco, valued at about were taken from the goods shed, removed to the town, and there sold to a business man at 4s. per lb. It is stated that this tobacco had been forwarded to the railway station by a Masterton firm for consignment to its Eketahuna branch, but the item had not been entered on the consignment note, and consequently the goods had remained behind at the station until they were taken away and sold. The mistake was almost immediately found out by the Masterton firm, and enquiry was instituted. The vendor or vendors of the tobacco are alleged to have rushed frantically to the business man to whom they had sold the goods, gave him his money back, and then, seizing hold of the two boxes, consigned the belated tobacco to the Eketahuna branch.
