HOCKEY.
(By Goalkeeper). The first match of the season was played yesterday in Symons’ paddock, between teams from Moutoa and Foxton. Moutoa put a strong team in the field and played with determination and dash from start to finish. Foxton had the misfortune to lose one of its players, Gillespie, just before the match, owing to his having received a nasty knock from the ball on the cheek which compelled him to retire. Foxton went on the fiield with ten men, or rather eight men and two boys. Moutoa beat the home team for the ball and had them on the defensive most of the time, and just before call of time had one goal to their credit. In the second spell Foxton put more life into the game and had Moutoa on the defensive for a while, but Marshall, who had been playing a good game at goal-keeper, relieved the pressure and put Foxton on the defensive once more. From a scramble in the Foxton goal, Moutoa scored another goal, thus winning by two goals to nil. Mr Woods made an officiant referee. —Notes crowded out.
