THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE DEPUTATION.

The deputation appointed by the Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting had an interview with the Minister for Lands (the Hon. J. McNab), yesterday morning. The Minister explained that the Manawatu and Oroua rivers were at present receiving attention, and surveyors were at work with the object of preparing a report on the general conditions affecting these streams. When the surveyor’s report was before the Minister, a commission would probably be appointed to collect information, which would be a guide for the drafting of a bill, giving the people interested locally the power to form a harbour and rivers board, and which he hoped would be put through Parliament during the coming session. The deputation were somewhat taken aback when the Minister unfolded the Government’s intentions in this connection, and it seems to us that it is time the people of Foxton had their eyes open to all the facts of the case.

Mr Morgan left Wellington this morning, and Mr Frankland is to interview the Minister for Marine. We expect to have a full report of the interviews in our next issue, together with opinions on the question, which is of the utmost importance to the residents of this town and district.
