OBITUARY.
“ lan Maclaren.” New York, May 7. , The death is announced ot the Rev. John Watson, D.D., better known by his pen-name, ‘ ‘ lan Maclaren.” Dr. Watson died at Mount Pleasant, lowa, from bloodpoisoning, following an attack of tonsilitis. The deceased was in his fifty-seventh year. The Rev. John Watson was born at Manningtree, Essex, in 1850, and was educated at Edinburgh and Germany. He joined the Free Church of Scotland in 1874, and was ordained in 1875. From 1880 to 1905 he was minister of Sefton Park Presbyterian Church, Liverpool. He is best known to the world as the author ot a series of books sketching Scottish life. The most popular of these are: —“Beside the Bonnie Briar Bush” (1894), “ The Days of Auld Lang Syne” (1892), ‘ ‘ Kate Carnegie and Those Ministers ” (.1896), “A Doctor of the Old School” (1897), “Afterwards ” (1898), “ Rabbi Saunderson” (1898), etc. His religious and theological writings are also numerous.
