THE GAS WORKS CONTRACT.
Agreement with Mr Butcher.
Preliminaries Settled.
At last night’s Borpugh Council meeting considerable time was devoted to the agreement giving Mr Butcher of Wellington the right to light the borough with coal gas for a period of 15 years, the Council to have the option of purchasing the works as a going , concern at periods of five, ten or fifteen /years. Failing the Council exercising this right at any of the periods mentioned, Mr Butcher to have a renewal for a further period of 15 years, without the Council having any option of purchase. Mr Stewart, as. representative for Mr Butcher, was present and discussed and explained the clauses of the agreement. The lengthy document was carefully read through by the Clerk. The Mayor explained that he had instructed Mr Innes, solicitor of Palmerston, to carefully peruse the document on behalf of the Council and report on same. After careful perusal the solicitor had reported that everything was in order and the borough’s interests were fully safeguarded. After many minor points had been fiirther discussed, Cr Baker proposed and Cr Frankland seconded, that the application of Mr T. W. Butcher, to establish gasWorks be cofirmed as per agreejment aildduly stamped and sealed, i—Carried unanimously. The seal and signatures were
duly affixed to the document and Mr ‘Butcher’s deposit of £SO handed over.
J£r Stewart stated that an engineer had keen appointed to carry out the work which would be put in hand almost immediately. The installation, he said, would be completed before next winter.
