Discussion In the Council.
At last night’s Borough Council meeting Cr. Shadbolt stated that he had heard that the members ot the Library Committee, being indisposed to take the trouble to select books for the public library, had asked the Town Clerk to make the selection.
The Town Clerk, in reply said that this was one of the many tales fabricated by the man in the street without the slightest foundation, and that as a matter of fact, the whole of the Library Committee, in conjunction with the Mayor and himself, had gone to a great deal of trouble and expenditure of time in making the selection which they thought would be suitable. Cr Shadbolt, however, stated that he could produce a witness who could prove the truth of the report. Members of the Library Committee then discussed the statement made by an anonymous correspondent in-reference to library matters. It was pointed out that the suggestion of the correspondent that the names of new books should be published would be given effect to. [We might mention that we were unaware until now that a Library Committee was in existence, not having seen any report presented to the Council of its transactions. The committee consists of the following : —The Mayor and Crs. Stiles, Frankland, Baker and Moore. Ed. H.J
