THE MARSDEN CROSS.
Unveiling Ceremony by the
Governor.
Auckland,. March 13
The ceremony in connection with the unveiling of the Marsden Cross at Oihi, Russell, Bay of Islands, was performed by the Governor yesterday afternoon in the presence of a large and representative gathering of Europeans and natives. The monument is one of the most interesting in the colony, and is erected on the site where the first Christian service held in New Zealand was conducted by the Rev. Samuel Marsden, nearly one hundred years ago. The day was fine, and the function passed off successfully.
The monument has been erected at Oihi, on the spot where the late Mr Marsden preached his first sermon in New Zealand, on Christmas Day, 1814. By close study of the early history of New Zealand, the Archdeacon ofWaimate (Archdeacon Walsh) has located the exact spot where the historical sermon was preached. The site has been surveyed, and New Zealanders will now be able to point to the beginning of their national life, marked by the stone cross.
