“WAKING” THE WRONG CORPSE.
Extraordinary Scene in a Village Cottage. An extraordinary blunder in connection with the identification cf a corpse was brought to light at an Irish “wake’’ in the little village of Chapelizod, near Dublin, recently. Some time ago an octogenarian villager became so ill that his relatives had to remove him to one of the Dublin hospitals. A few days after news reached them of his death, and they at once put the house in order in preparation for the “ wake.” In the evening the body arrived. The coffin seemed unduly bulky and heavy, for the villager was only a small man, and no one suspected that a mistake had been made. The “ wake ” took place, lasting through the night. Towards the end a relative expressed a desire to see the dead man. The coffin-lid was raised and then those around it were horrified tO'lintl that they had been “waking’’a stranger. There was great excitement and hurried telephone messages to the hospital, where the body of the relative was still lying/ In due course matters'were righted.
