CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
A meeting of the Council of the local Chamber of, Commerce was, held in the Municipal Chambers last evening. Present Messrs P. Hennessy (chairman) Frankland, Moore, Rimmer, Perreau and the Secretary (Mr P. H. Rae-Howard). Minutes of the previous meeting read and confirmed.
Correspondence was read from : the Hon. Hall-Jones, Minister for Railways stating that a sum would be placed on the estimates for wharf extension during the coming financial year. And the river channel was now being attended to.—Members expressed satisfac-' tion that this important matter was now receiving proper attention at the hands of the Department. From the Marine Department, informing the Chamber that it could not see its way at present to appoint an assistant pilot but that the appointment of a competent boatman was now under consideration, and that if the pilot was in need of assistance in the meantime he could employ same.
Two letters were received from the Borough Council : (1) In reference: to by-law being passed compelling owners of. property to provide two 400-gallon tanks to each house, apd stating that the matter had been held over till next meeting ; (2) In reference to invitation of the Palmerston chamber to inspect wharf and river and acceding to request to co-operate with the Chamber in entertaining the visitors. After a desultory discussion on several matters the Council rose.
