SEA FISHERMEN AND TROUT.
Invercargill, Thursday. Replying to a deputation of fishermen who waited upon him regarding the netting of trout at the mouths of rivers and estuaries, Mr Millar said he was satisfied that the trout had become acclimatised to the sea. He was going to have some experimental trawling done, and that might throw light on the matter. In regard to mouths of fresh water rivers, he would not allow any netting or trawling for trout within half a mile of the mouth. That would apply to such rivers as the Waitaki, Selwyn and Rakaia, but not to estuaries. Any trout caught outside that limit should be allowed to belong to the fishermen. In the spawning season he would absolutely prohibit the taking of trout, and he would not permit under any conditions the use of set nets in narrow water.
