THE LIGHTING QUESTION.
AFTER a period of nearly two years the Borough Council has decided to take definite action in regard to the lighting question. One councillor wanted to shelve the question for the new Council to deal with, but we are pleased to say that the Council as a whole, are determined to face rather than shirk, this important question. Three firms are prepared to light the town with gas by private enterprise. They have been asked to definitely state their proposals before a special meeting to be held on the 25th inst. The Council will go thoroughly into the proposals on that date, and decide which of the three shall undertake the work. The ratepayers have decided against a loan for municipal works, and it now remains for a company to provide the borough with up-to-date lighting. We commend the Council in the circumstances for its action, and hope to see the town provided with an up-to-date illuminant before many months are over.
