We understand that the Foxton party of vocalists, with a few additions, intend going into active reheaisal shortly, for ihe purpose of visiting neighboring towns. Mr Walter E. Axup, father of the victim of yesterday’s tragedy in Abel Smith street, was formerly a farmer in the Rangitikei district. He had a farm of about three hundred acres near Rata.—Times.

A decided change in the weather set in last night and copious rains fell throughout the district. Today the temperature is considerably lower with a stiff breeze blowing.

The Inspector of Nusiauces tendered his resignation to the Borough Council this morning. His action is the outcome of the strictures passed upon him by certain councilors at the last meeting.

A meeting df the Ladies Committee of the Borough Band Bazaar was held in Mr Perreau’s tea rooms at 3 o’clock yesterday. A letter was read from Mr Jellicoe, of Greytown, giving complete details of the Village .Fair held by the Greytown Volunteers. It was decided to follow their example as closely as practicable. The ladies will meet at Mrs J. Wall’s residence next Wednesday, 20th inst., to form a sewing bee. Subscription lists are ont, and the affair promises to be a big success.

Our local stump orator, Mr Dan Heagerty, delivered a smart retort to an individual who was foolish enough to provide the opportunity at last night’s Rongotea concert. The noted impersonator had just returned to an encore after impersonating our late Premier in a speech on the land question, when the “ pit ” occupant blurted out, “Can’t you let the dead rest?’’ Quick as a flash came the reply : “ Our late Premier’s memory is immortal,” and judging by the applause of the audience, and the silence of the intruder, who evidently sank into oblivion, we should imagine the retort left its sting behind. Rongotea sports passed off successfully yesterday, though the absence of a band was very noticeable. The concert in the evening was a marked success, all the items meriting hearty applause. Among the most successful, Miss Ettie Webb’s coon song “ Just a Little Rocking Chair and You,” deserves special mention, while Mr Dan Heagerty’s .impersonation series “took on.” Encores greeted the two comics, Bob Grace and Percy Jeffreys, in their various numbers, while Geo. Fowler rendered “ Davey Jones” and “Down where the Wessberger Flows,” with much success. Other items to gain applause were the sailor’s hornpipe by Mr Skleners and a coon song by E. Sutherland. The sketch, “A Haunted Village,” was full of laughter, and proved a bright finale to a sparkling entertainment. Messrs Cargill (piano) and McLean (violin) provided excellent overtures and accompaniments, and Foxton is fortunate in securing such an acquisition to its musical circle. Mrs Jeffreys accompanied Mr Jeffreys in his items with effect. The Foxton party enjoyed the dance which followed, immensely, and arrived home in the early hours of the morning. The Economic, Foxton, give discount stamps to all purchaser,*

By reason of the resignation of Cr Gray, there is an extraordinary vacancy on the Borough Council.

Mr Alf. Fraser notifies that he has disposed of his bookselling and stationery business to Mr J. T. as from February 4th. He thanks the public for the very liberal support accorded him, and solicits a continuance of same for his successor. All accounts owing to Mr Fraser are to be paid at the Council Chambers.

The subject of street and footpath improvement was brought under the notice of the Council at its recent meeting by Cr Hickson, who thought something should be done to improve certain steets and footways. Cr Frankland favoured constructing footpaths on the same principle as that carried out in the locality near the Masonic Hall. Cr Moore favoured street and footpath improvement being carried out in sections. No futher action, however, was taking at the meeting.

A very interesting and instructive lecture was delivered by Mr W. A. Shaw M. A. in the local Presbyterian Church last evening on foreign missions conducted by the Presbyterian Church in the mission fields of India, China New Hebrides and elsewhere. Another lecture will be delivered to-night. Admission is free but a collection will be taken upon behalf of the missions fund.
