THE PAPAKAIO MURDER.
Dunedin, December 18
The trial of John Findlay charged with the murder ot Mr Rennie, schoolmaster at Papakaio, commenced this morning. Mr Hanlon defended and challenged four jurymen. The Crown Prosecutor said the case rested largely on circumstantial evidence. In this case motive predominated and he would show that the motive was robbery. Learned counsel then described how deceased was shot through the head while asleep, and detailed the movements of the prisoner, who had sought to conceal his identity all through, and had impersonated a runaway sailor. It would be shown that for hours the prisoner was hovering about watching Ronnie’s house. Later accused actually went to the house, and saw the girl who cleaned out the place. He said he was canvassing for a baker's orders, asking who Rennie was ahd how many lived in the house, Later. In the Supreme Court to-day further evidence was heard. Later in the afternoon the evidence for the Crown was concluded. To-morrow the address of counsel for accused will be heard.
