FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Ordinary Meeting.
The ordinary meeting of the above was held in the Borough Council Chambers last evening. Present—His Worship the Mayor (B. G. Gower. Esq.), and Crs Baker, Gray, Frankland, Moore, Shadbolt and Stiles.
Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows
From the Secretary of the Foxtou Borough Band, asking for donation. —The Council expressed its sympathy with the request, and at the earliest opportunity will make a donation as usual. From Mr Jno. Stevens, stating that clause relating to the Foxton reserves had passed both houses and would become law in a few days.—The Clerk was authorised to write thanking the member for the district for the trouble he had gone to in getting the measure altered.
From the Secretary of the Friendly Societies Council applying for use of Victoria Park for sports gathering and picnic on January Ist. —Application granted on the usual terms.
From the Clerk of the Eketahuna Town Board, requesting information re borough lighting.— Clerk instructed to write stating that the question of lighting the borough is now being considered ; the present illuminant is kerosene. From N.Z. Shipping Co. asking permission to take railway crossing over Harbour Street into grading and dumping shed, the work to be carried out to the full satisfaction ofthe Council. The plans of building and siding together with specifications were also submitted for the Council’s approval.—Permission granted, also that the Company be granted permission to deposit surplus sod on Council’s section provided that the Te Awahou stream is protected by facined and left secure against wind drift.
From the Hospital Day Committee, Palmerston North, stating that the day previous to Christmas Day be set apart for Hospital Day collections throughout the district, and suggesting that the various churches take up their collections on this day for the benefit of the Institution. —Decided that Ministers of each denomination fall in with the request. jFrom the Bulls Town Board, asking for reduction in licensing expenses.
From the Department of Agriculture, notifying that African box thorn had been declared a noxious weed. From the Foxton School Committee, returning thanks for use of library room in which to hold meetings. Reports. overseer reported upon works carried out during the month and suggested certain necessary works to footpaths etc. The poundkeeper notified that 24 horses horses and 9 cows had been impounded during the month Proposed by Cr Baker and seconded by Cr Stiles that the ranger be instructed to carry out his duties in a more thorough manner as the streets are constantly full of stray horses and cattle.
The treasurer’s report showed that since the last monthly meeting the sum of /308 7 7 had been paid into the district fund account, and into the Council Chamber Loan account. The bank balance stood as follows :—Dis trict fund account, cr ,£276 12s 9d ; Council Chambers loan account cr, The balances of separate accounts including last night’s payments are as follow General account (overdrawn), ,£448 7s id ; Eibrary account, cr, 4s fid; Cemetery account, cr, 13s lod ; Reserves account, cr, 2s 7d ; Interest account, cr, 2s Bd. The account of Mr Rimmer for extras to Council Chambers was passed less to be paid on completionloi work. General. Mr McDonald to be given notice to shift all posts and wires on the target ranee, and that Crs Austin, Stiles and Gray point out to him the boundary. Cr Moore proposed and Cr Frankland seconded that the Council take all steps required by the solicitors of Messrs Levin & Co. in regard to the leasing of part of Grav-street. —Carrie!
Proposed by Cr Moore, seconded by Cr Frankland, and carried, ThatMrAlf. Fraser be appointed valuer under and for the purposes of section 240 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1900, to value the part ot Gray street (now closed; not used for Municipal Buildings, his valuation to be made within two days trom this date, a.id that immediately on his valuation being made that portion ~r Ora'/ st-eet be offered by the Town Clerk on behalf of the Council to the adjoining owners at the
value fixed, the halt of the street to the middle line being offered to the owner on either side respectively ; that if either adjoining owner declinee to purchase, the whole to be offered to the other ; the adjoining owners to be given not more than seven days within which to signify acceptance of the offer ; and that if both owners refuse to purchase, the clerk is hereby authorised to immediately give public notice that the lease of that part of Gray street will_ be offered by public auction in thirty days (date to be notified) from the date of such notice, and otherwise comply with the provisions of section 194 subsection 1 ofthe Municipal Corporations Act; and that the clerk write at an early date for the approval of the Governor in Council to the east end of the land formerly occupied by Gray street (area to be defined) being used for Municipal buildings.
