Foxton Literary and Debating Society.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the above was held in Mr Hill's room;; on I'ucsdav night. There wire a Bur number present, and Mr Herston Frankland was voted to the chair. The subject for the evening was an address by Mr h. Jenks on the- question of ” The Origin of Our Earth/’ The speaker handled this most interesting subject in a, very masterly manner. Ble spoke on die nebula theory. According to this, the sun was at some distant period a gaseous mass, similar to the immense luminous clouds that ate sometimes visible in the heavens. In course of time this mass solidified, cooling very gradually, and as a consequence contracted its bulk; throwing off the earth and the other . planets of. the solar system.. These in their, turn threw off smaller bodies —the moons--and cooling and, contracting in.the same way as the sun, they „by slow degrees attained to their present state, j Earthquakes are examples of this contracting' process, which is constantly going on. The next meeting will be held next Tuesday week in the Good Templars’ Hall when the following subject will be debated, Is Man’s Capacity for Greatness the Cause of His Unhappiness.” Mr Herston Frankland will lead in the affirmative, and the Rev. Mr Wilson in the negative. The public are invited to attend.
