NOTES ON HOROWHENUA,

Punters at Levin meeting picked numerous winners, but few came out on the right side of the ledger to any extent, owing to the ridiculously small dividends paid. Speaking of the small prices paid, it has come to our ears that a punter who had 30s on a winner, and £1 on the second horse, although drawing two dividends, made only ns on the transaction. The first horse paid £1 12s and the second 13s in a field of five. This really meant that the punter laid £2 10s to its that he would place first and second horse correctly. _ Just fancy ? sto x on. And so it was throughout the meeting. The public got a severe reverse when Bourrasque suffered defeat in the Cup. Flameu was ridden a good race by Syd. Reid. Ihe change of trainer and surroundings seems to have done the horse good, for he beat fairly on his merits, running the distance in 2min 9^sec. Bourrasque seems to be going stale. Apiti is likely to land a big stake throughout the jumping season. He is the best leaper I have seen for some time, and he has pace with it. Sir Geraint won both his races easily in good time, and should Win in better company when enAboriginal is a handsome looking hack that can gallop very fast. After being left badly, and receiving a rough passage in the race, he woo the Fving easily on the first day, and als6 had a soft thing on in his event on Saturday. The black Merriwee gelding should go on running. Charlie Jenkins had a good look in at the meeting, winning eight events during the two days. It is a long time since Alf. Shearsby trained so many winners at one meeting as at Leyin. On the two days he led in eight winners, only one being a double winner, Sir Geraint. Eo-d Soult proved on Saturday that he can gallop a fast five furlongs, when he covered the distance in 1.1, Probability was no use to him at all.

Toney Messena had no luck with his team at Horowheuua. Miss Lancelot ran second in her second attempt, and was afterwards sold to a Palmerston sport at a very satisfactory figure, so we understand. Barmaid pulled up lame after a gallop and had to be left at Levin, without competing at the meeting, , Young Percy Rowe made too much use of Waitapu in the initial stages of his race, but we doubt whether Bred Archer, in his best .day, could have won on him, as those finishing in front of him can both gallop fast, and they cut out the mile in i min 44Sec. Why the horse was allotted Bst 61b the second day is best known to the handicapper himself.

The public followed A. Wright’s luck with Soult on Saturday, with the -result that his charge, Kai Errin, was backed down to a 30s dividend in the Hack Scurry. The good thing went out, the winner turning up in Playmate, trained by Shearsby, and ridden by Jenkins.

It is said that the connections of Sardonyx lost heavily when Kuroki defeated them in the Second Hack Hurdles.

• Old Furneaux ran a couple of good races at Levin, considering his backward condition.

Laing’s Kingsrauir put in a good run in the Hack Scurry at Levin. This chestnut should make a good hurdler. He is big enough.

The general conduct of this year's meeting was in advance of recent gatherings, and nominations should show an increase in future.

Mr Roe, the Club’s new secretary, filled the position capably and courteously, and much of the success of the meeting was due to his guidance.
