London, March 18,
A Pure Beer Bill, requiring a publication to supply beer containing 85 per cent of barley malt, was negatived in the House of Commons 164 to 109. The clauses were considered unworkable. Mr Churchill, in a lettey to a correspondent, denies that a depreciation in shares is due to the Government policy, but attributes it to Mr Balfour’s and Mr Chamberlain’s pessimistic orations and criticisms, and to Mr Chamberlain shifting his ground of attack as compared with the earlier part of the session.
