The Bishop of Birmingham, addressing the London Christian Social Union, said he gladly welcomed the more adequate representation of Labour members in Parliament, He was confident that, no matter what mistakes thf Labour members might make, h was the only way to properly appreciate the social evils which all desired to see remedied. The Pall Mall Gazette states that British and Japanese Commissioners are about to consider the terms of a new commercial treaty, which is expected to be operative in July. The Court of Appeal has declined to compel the newspapers to reveal the name of the person Supplying them with a statement whereon an alleged libel on the Salvation Army was founded. The statement was to the effect that the Salvationists take care of all the lowest criminals, regardless of their offences, considering crime a disease, and that the authorities of Aylesbury Prison had handed them a man named Meakin, convicted of murder in 1894 while in. a fit of jealousy. The five miners, who were entombed in a mine at Clockmannan, Scotland, have been rescued. Obituary—-James Bonwick, historian. New York, February 7, A goods train escaped a siding and descended a slope of the Rockies. It collided with a passenger train at Helena, Montana. The carriages were fired and six people perished. Twenty were injured.
