Yesterday afternoon was a_ very auspicius occasion from the point of view of the school schildren, when the annua! distribution of prizes and gifts associated with the “ breaking, up ” for the Christmas vacation took place. A large sum had been generously sub* scribed for the purpose by the townspeople and the books prizes were well chosen. At the conclusion of the prize distribution every child in the school was presented with a small gilt to mark the occasion. Standards Ito VII were congregated in the west room, and the infants in the centre room. The members of the committee present were Mr Frankland, Mr Baker (chairman) and Rev Wilson. There were also a fair number of ladies present. Mr Baker, in opening the proceedings, mentioned that this breaking up was of doable importance, as it was the last time they would “ break up ” in the old school. lie mentioned th« fact that many of the children's mothers and lathers had been educated in Ihe building; in fact, he himself was educated there, besides serving some time as a pupil teacher in it. He urged the children to do their best next year and maintain the good re* ports hitherto presented by the In* spectors. He then called upon Mr Wilson to address them. The prizes were then presented to the successful ones by Mrs Frankland, . After the distribution of prizes, the headmaster addressed the children, eulogising the efforts of the chairman and the committee for their welfare. He wished them all a very enjoyable holiday.
