Politics in France.
HEATED SCENES. Paris, Nov. 12 M. Berteaux, Minister for War, in a private letter to \M. Rouvier, the Premier, intimated his intentio» of resigning his portfolio unless, the situation was made clear. The Minister emphasised the pqint that 226 Republicans of the left had deserted the Government many abstaining from divisions on questions concerning the right of officials to combine. The majority of, divisions, he pointed out, consisted of Conservatives and Nationalists.
During the sitting of the Chamber of Deputies, a member, approaching the Government •benches, shouted “You captives” to the Right. M'. Berteaux instantly left the Chamber in token of resignation, and then re-entered, and sat among his colleagues on the extreme Left. Heated scenes ensued.
M. Berteaux maintained his intention to resign, on the ground that his position was humilating. M. Rouvier emphasised his desire to depend exclusively on his Republican majority. The Chamber, by 310 votes to 147, adopted a resolution trusting that the Government would carry out its policy of separation of Church and State, relying solely on its Republican majority.
