Fire Prevention.

PRICING MANUAL ENGINE PLANT. At last night’s council meeting Cr Raker moved that prices be obtained of a manual engine, and 3m iron pipes, and rubber hose. He thought a 3m main laid from the river up the Awahou drain to Main street and from that point southward along to the Family Hotel and northward to the courthouse would provide means of dealing with a fire. Cr Frankland seconded.

Cr Stiles said manual engines were out-of-date. A chemical engine could he charged at any house. Cr Coley pointed out that chemical engines were only for u«e until engines got ready for working. Water was not used in charging them, Cr Shadbolt did not think pipes were necessary. Hose could be used to connect the manual engine with the river, and could be used in back streets by connecting with wells or creeks.

Cr Baker considered the cost ot maintenance in the case of iron pipes would be cheapest. The motion was carried.

TRIAL ARTESIAN BORE. Cr Cray moved that councillors contribute £lO each toward the cost of making a triAl bore, the money to be returned if the trial proved successful and a scheme of water supply was gone on with. He said water was an urgent necessity, and something must be done soon.

Cr Coley seconded. Cr Moore asked why councillors should be expected to d© this personally when the ratepayers as a whole were interested.

On a division the ayes were Crs Gray, Coley. Austin, Frankland ; noes, CrsThadholt, Moore, Stiles, Baker. The Mayor decided against the motion.

In reply to a letter from the Railway Engineeron the subject of area the council might require at the railway windmill site for water works purposes it was decided to state that the hill and about a quarter of an acre on the north side would ba most suitable.
