Borough Council.

ORDINARY MEETING. The Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (B. O. GoWer, Esq), Crs Coley, Austin, Gray, Shadbolt, Elaukland, Baker, Moore and Stiles. PAYMENT OF a DEFICIENCY-.

Cr Cole’p brought up the question of payment of tot’ deficiency arising out of the recent smoke concert tendered to Parliamentary vlsltofS, in which the citizens’ committee had decided to ask the Council to pay the balance. He opposed the' Council being saddled with the expense. At the committee meetings it Wah^ stated that if any had to be met it would be paid by subscription by the members of the comh'it-tea . Cr Gray agreed on the' point. Cr Frankland was agreeable to pay his share of the deficit and believed others on the committee would dd the same.

Crs Austi’ll mki Shadbolt spoke in a similar strain. The Mayor said he was qtiite willing to pay his share; but he thought councillors "did a good deal for ratepayers and he did not think the latter \WwJd object to this small amount being charged to the rates. The Council had power to pay the amount. 'Fire' Town Clerk explained in this connection that be had not heard of the understanding come to by the entertainment committee to subscribe the deficiency themselves, Of he would not have moved at the last meeting asking the Council to the ariiottnt. .

Cr Frankland moved alid Cr Shacfbolt seconded, “that the deficiency be paid by the committee. Cr Baker said that so long as all members paid their share it would be satisfactory, but if only a few subscribed it would not be fair to them.

Cr Coley considered that if the suggestion that the council pay were carried it would be robbing the ratepayers. The motion was carried. „

CORRESPONDENCE. A letter was read from the newly formed Railway Teague asking the council to co-operate in urging the construction of the Tevin-Greatford railway. ROAN PROPOSALS. On the motion of Crs Baker and Stiles it was resolved to hold a special meeting on the 29th hist, to further consider lean proposals. COMMITTEE REPORTS, The Mayor reported on results of various committees, visits, etc. No. 1 Line, it was found, would entail too much expense to be made passable for vehicular traffic, and owing to the failure o'a project to start a creamery in the locality it was now unnecessary to take any action. In Russel! street the repair of a culvert was all that was needed. RUBBISH DEPOT. After some discussion it was decided to fence off an area in Mr Purcell’s and to close the present depot.
