Louisa Marie Caley, a married woman, attempted to commit suicide at Auckland by cutting her throat. She was taken to the hospital and is considered out of danger.
An unoccupied dwelhnghouse was destroyed at Bell Block, near New Plymouth, some day« ago. and at an inquiry touching the incident a verdict of incendiarism against some person unknown was returned. The Wanganui Education Board has increased the salary of the assistant secretary to /200, and the Rangitikei “Advocate” suggests that it is time that some attention was given to the increasing cost of administration.
A deal and dumb woman, Bertha Forrest, 33 years of age, was found unconscious at her residence in Auckland with a bottle containing carbolic acid beside her and was taken to the hospital, whei'e she died. A little bov (son of W. S. Lnnn) fell off the Taruheru Bridge, Gisborne, and two people who went to his rescue got into difficulties. Two others gave a hand and all got out safely. Messrs Jackson and Swift, of the Louth Nurseries, Norbiton Road, have an announcement in this issue of interest to all who intend planting during the current season. Owing to the Public Hall being engaged this evening the meeting in connection with the Chamber of Commerce has been adjourned to Tuesday evening at 7.30 p.m. Captain Edwin telegraphed to-day : “ Moderate to strong winds from between south and east and north-east; glass rise; tides decreasing; sea moderate; probably frost to-night.” At the Supreme Court, Auckland, William Johnston, alias Frederick Middleton, tor the theft of a horse and money, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. John McCarthy for breaking and entering got sixteen months.
