Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, MAY 18, 1905. PATENT MEDICINES.
A little while ago Sir Joseph Ward, referring to the new regulations affecting patent medicines, declare.) that he had good authority for saying that they were such as to satisfy the inanafacturers and proprietors of those articles. How much value was to be placed on the declaration we now know. As a matter of fact, all newspaper proprietors in the colony knew that Sir Joseph was, to say the least, mistaken. They .knew that the manufacturers wenwithdrawing advertisements, which indicated a very clear intention to discontinue the New Zealand trade if the regulations were enforced. However there can be no longer any doubt oi. the subject. The representatives o' 'most of the large proprietaries haw met in Sydney, and their discussion shows a decided intention not to sul - mit to the regulations. And it is said that Sir Joseph will once more amend them. The general view of the thinking'public has always been that the regulations are an unnecessary and offensive interference with trade. No good purpose can be served by requiring the declaration of the formulae used in the manufacture of such nostrums. If they contain noxious oj harmful elements, the chemists of the Government can find out that by analysis, and-a measure might be introduced to enable such articles to be prohibited. As a rule, however, the charge against these preparations is that, they are only too harmless. The composition of many of them is wellknown to the profession, but the public are none the wiser. They prefer a recognised trade article to the same thing made up by the local chemist at a less price, and incidentally the Government reaps a tidy sum in Customs duties, which will be lost if the regulations are maintained. We think that the Government took the wrong course in the first place, and that their second proposals were little better. It may be humiliating, but we fancy they will have to agree to still further modifications,
