FOXTON’S NEW ACQUISITION. There were some twenty five business men present in the Public Hall or: Thursday coning at the public meeting convened by Mr A!f. Fraser to consider the advisablenoss of forming a Chamber of Commerce in Foxton. On the motion of Messrs J. Cameron and W. H. Walker Mr P. J. Hennessy was voted to (ho chair, and aft t readthe advertisement convening the meeting srnd rhat such a Indy as a r'h imb-r of Commerce was a new thbig to him. Mr Fraser, however, had obtained information relating to ih> constiintiorj of a chamber, and (ho chairman called, upon him to address the meeting. Mr Fraser then gave a short resume of (he anus and objects of such an organisation, and read through the rules of the Palmerston chamber. The matter of a chamber for Foxton was not new, as an attempt was made a vear or (wo ago but fell through. A harbour board was also aimed at, but nof achieved. A Chamber of Com merce could often represent the people and secure more benefit to the interests of a place than could a local body, and he instanced several matters which would lie (P objects for a chamber’s attention. Its main object would he to promote trade and com merce. and to promote or oppose legislati on. If business men had been doing well in the past, was that, he asked, any reason why thev should not now combine to do better by helping one another? Mr Fraser urged that the time was opportune for taking such a step, and moyid that the business men of Foxton form themselves into a chamber of commerce. Mr Walker seconded the motion, which was carried. The chairman considered that they should get to work at once and appoint a committee. A provisional committee consisting of Messrs Hennessy, Stiles, Walker. Cameron, and Fraser, was appointed *0 go info the question of rules, etc., and canvass the town for further members. -ptm (subscription was fixed at 10s per annum. Mr John Stevens addressed a few remarks to the meeting pointing out advantages that might accrue from well directed efforts made by the chamber. These we will refer to at a later date. Eighteen names were handed in to Mr Fraser, who undertook the secretarial duties temporarily, in the room, and (he meeting adjourned to the 18th inst at 7.30 p.m.
