The Commonwealth.
REVENUE RETURNS. ATTEMPT T > UNDERMINE MINISTRY. Melbourne, May a. The Commonwealth revenue returns for the ten months show a decrease of £377,000 and it seems likely that the Treasurer’s estimate for the year will fall short by £IOO,000. The decrease is mainly in spirits, narcotics, sugar, and metals. A good deal of intriguing is going on to break up the coalition. Some members of the Opposition propose the formation of a Liberal alliance, which will have for its policy the Labour Party’s views minus its pledge and its avowal to socialism. The re-opening of the tariff question will be one of the most important features. The intriguers hope to attract Mr Deakin as leader of the party. Mr Isaacs they do not consider as he does not carry sufficient weight for the position.
