Foxton Literary and Debating Society.
The ordinary meeting of (he Society was held last night, there being a large attendance of member,'. Mr E. Spelman was elected to the chair. Some business was first transacted. It was decided that the secretary should write to certain members, pointing out to them the irregularity of their attendance, and informing them of the rale with regard to non attendcrs. Rev. Wilson also suggested that a meeting of the committee be held to consider the alteration of two debates. This suggestion was approved of by the meeting. It was decided to hold a special meeting on Monday Sih May, to discuss and criticise the Society’s Magazine. The subject for the evening was: then proceeded with, which was “ The Life and Times of Goldsmith.” Mr L. Jenks opened with a brief sketch of the life and character of the great poet, after which Mr Barnard read a short paper on’the famous literary club of which Goldsmith was a member. Mr Moore gave some interesting accounts of Goldsmith’s peculiarly simple nature and the Rev. H. F. Wilson analysed and criticised “The Traveller” in a most instructive manner. Other members aLo spoke on the subject. Altogether a most enjoyable evening was spent. The following were nominated as members ot the Society : —Dr Rogers and Messrs E. Arkle, LL.B., and A. D. Spiers. Dr Rogers and Mr Arkle were also present as visitors at the meeting. The subject for next meeting will be a debate “ International Arbitration. Is it a substitute for war ? ”
