ORDINARY MEETING, The Foxidn Borough Council met last evening. When there were present (JIC Mayor (Mr G. A, Simpson), and Ci? fsyittfinSf Gower,' Baker, Stiles, Spelman, Spell’s add Austin.CLOSING OF GREY STRE^f. Crs Baker and Symons considered (here had been no acknowledgment.- , The Maydr said that holding over {he claim was equal loan acknowledgment. It was not repudiated. Cl* Speif* said that what the council had to consider was the state of the land as it was at present, and not its valiie as it might bo at some future date. .Cr Stiles suggested that the pOiiricil’s solicitors should see what'arrangement cdnld be made to settle the claim.
Cf Gower Objected to this.- It would be better for the ddliridil id de-' fer the matter to see if Mrs Symons would make an offer for settlement that could be agreed to.
Cr Speirs thought the proper course was to let the matter proceed according to law. t After some further desultory discussion the matter dropped, a motion being passed that the matter he referred to the council’s solicitors.
The Town Clerk explained briefly what had happened in connection with the case, for the information of the council. As matters stood now the claimant was in exactly th* same position as before She put id her first claim, an award by the Supreme Court having been set aside. Subsequently on the motion of Cr Speirs, seconded by Cr Stiles, it was decided “ That the town clerk be instructed to take the necessary steps to close Gray Street, and that a special meeting of the council be held on a date to be arranged to confirm the same.’'' DISTRICT ELECTORS’ LtSf. The council confirmed the district electors’ list prepared for the current year. LIDDELL STREET. A suggestion to form a part of the footpath in this street, approaching the Masonic Hall, was deterred for the incoming council to deal with. reports. The Foreman reported on the work of the month. The Inspectar of Nuisances reported that the general sanitary condition of the borough was satisfactory. The reports were adopted. accounts. Accounts were passed totalling £22% 73 id, being £42 3s 3d on general account, £174 xos on loan account, and £9 13s 8d on library account. DEBRIS IN DRAINS. It was decided to defer a proposal that sloping iron bars be placed some fifteen feet away from culverts to act as a trap to catch debris and so prevent its blocking a long culvert in Baker street. RANGER. It was decided that the action of the Mayor in accepting the tender of Hans Andresen for the position of ranger be confirmed. cutting hedges. It was decided that notice be given to residents in Baker Street to cut overhanging hedges and clear rubbish away, so as to facilitate the cleaning of drains. A NEW DRAIN. A proposal to put on the day men to cut a new drain in Union Street from No. 6 Line to a point to meet Messrs Hickson and Reeves’ drain was held over, pending receipt of permission from adjoining landowners to divert water on to their properties. CLEANING DRAINS. The tender of Charles Hill, at 2s a chain, for cleaning all drain* in the borough, was accepted. The council then adjourned.
