AUSTRALIA v. NEW ZEALAND. The first test match between Australia and New Zealand commenced at Lancaster Park, Christchurch, yesterday afternoon in perfect cricketing weather. The attendance of the public was hardly up to expectations, about three thousand being present, including his Excellency the Governor and party. Sims was chosen captain of the New Zealand team. Laver, Kelly, and Howell stood out of the Australian team; A sensational start was made, Duff being caught first ball -if Callaaway. The association of Trumpet and Hill quickly put a different aspect on affairs. The New Zealand fielding was lamentably poor, while the catching was atrocious, seven chances out of nine being dropped.
