Gala. Day at Shannon, THE ANNUAL RACE MEETING, Race-day at Shannon is the one l particular day of the year when the Manawatu township residents appeal in real holiday attire, and arts all out for the day on pWaam’ti bent. Yesterday was no exception to the rule; as a result the Shannon Hack Racing Club recorded it most successful gathering. A lovely sun shone o’er the scene which showed the pretty eostumes of the ladies off to effect. Amongst those present were Visitors from all over the Manawaru, Foxton being well represented. The Club have Shade many improvements since last gathering, though we hope to she the turn at the top dt thC straight attended to before next meeting comes round. The Shannon Brass Band were in attendance, and considerably enlivened proceedings with tuneful selections. It i* almost impossible to believe that this band has only baeti in existence some fout months. The Band is certainly a credit to the township. One of the best of racecourse luncheons was provided by Mr Angus, of Wellington, whose staff of waitresses courteously attended to the wants of their many patrons. Mrs Yo.ungi df Turakina, had charge of the ‘drinking saloc-ir, and appeared to do good business. There being no totalisator rnetallicians were present from all parts of the colony, and the club netted some 34 guineas in betting fees. The bookmakers meeting has its humorous side, and a Certain aipoUnt,of rtjjrtfi was derived yesterday froth the hallihg of the odds. Generally speaking, matters finished tip fairly even between bookmaker and punter. Foxton owned horses failed to register a win, though all the events went to visiting Rather a meritorious perfdrrHance was registered by Charlie Jenkins, who signalled, his first appearance at a Shannon meeting by steering four winners and two seconds out of seven mounts. The racing itself was firstclass, not a single accident occurring, whilst some of the finishes were of a close and exciting nature, which paid a tribute to the handicapping of Mr Ulie ShattrtOm A slight demonstration Was made at the judged decision In thfe Hurry Scurry, many being of the opinion that Taiihou just lasted long enough to Win. However, the public should remember that the person in the box is in the only position to judge correctly. The staffer, Mr J. L. Proctor, thade even despatches throughout, whilst the officials worked hard to ensure success, particularly Mr C. M. Richards, whojproved himself a capable and obliging secretary. Others assisting in the management of the meeting were Messrs Tom Cameron, Ulic Shannon, and Angus Keith. Tommy Scott was the most successful trainer, with three winners, H. McManaway claiming two, and Alf. Shearsby one, whilst the Cup winner (Lull) was trained by his owner. The racing resulted :
