Russo-Japanese Struggle.
DEFECTIVE TRANSPORT ARRANGEMENTS. REPORTED RUSSIAN RETREAT. London, February 27. The transport of troops to the front is greatly delayed. A brigade leaving Odessa in December has only reached Omsk. A fight is progressing at Tieling Pass. French St. Petersburg advices state that General Linevitch retreated precipitately before superior numbers. SERIOUS BATTLE IN PROGRESS. A MUSCOVITE PROTEST. London, February 28. A Reuter message states that Chinese at Newchwang declare that a general engament is in progress all along the line. The heaviest fighting is on the Japanese right, where General Knroki is sweeping far to the north, threatening to crumple the Russians back on the railway.
A special force is reported to be moving north-east against the Russian railway communication with Vladivostok.
General Kuropatkin reports that the Japanese continue to turn both flanks of the Russian army at Tsinchonshan, especially the left flank. The Japanese are also advancing against Kautelin, where they are turning the Russian left flank.
Russia has protested against Japan’s persistent violation oi China’s neutrality, especially in marching through Mongolia to get to the rear of the Russian army west of the railway. HAPPENINGS AT SEA. DUTCH CONTRABAND RUNNERS. The third Baltic fleet has coaled off Cherbourg (France). It is reported at Rotterdam that the Japanese nave captured near Formosa two Dutch liners carrying contraband. VLADIVOSTOK CUT OFF. MUKDEN UNDER FIRE. London. February 28. The Russians at Mukden report that the Japanese are in possession of Taling; also the pass between Taling and Kantielin. French advices from St. Petersburg state that Japanese operations prevent succour reaching Vladivostok. It is reported sixty thousand Japanese are marching on Vladivostok. The Japanese, with n-inch guns, are shelling Mukden. The Japanese are absolutely silent about General Kuroki’s operations.
